Katikkiro Expresses Concern Over Poor Sanitation and Rising Disease Burden in Buvuma

BY Nasser Kayanja
The Katikkiro of Buganda has expressed concern over the alarming health situation in Buvuma District, citing poor sanitation as a major challenge affecting residents.

Buvuma reportedly has the highest number of households without latrines, an indication that many residents resort to using the lake for sanitation. This has led to outbreaks of diseases, particularly those linked to poor hygiene, resulting in loss of lives.

Health experts indicate that 70% of illnesses affecting communities are caused by poor sanitation and hygiene. While in Buvuma, the Katikkiro, Charles Peter Mayiga, urged Kabaka’s chiefs to mobilize residents to construct latrines and emphasize regular handwashing to safeguard lives.

He made the appeal during his visit to Buvuma Health Centre IV, where he was assessing service delivery and the general state of operations at the facility.

Dr. Remmie Ndyanabo, the Medical Superintendent of Buvuma Health Centre IV, also expressed concern over the rising number of HIV/AIDS cases, attributing the increase to patients who delay seeking treatment and fail to adhere consistently to their medication.
