Grief engulfed Kiteredde Village in Rakai District as family, colleagues and leaders paid tribute to Next Media Group newscaster Julius Kitone,.
Kitone ,35 was remembered as a disciplined, humble and deeply committed person to his profession during an emotional burial ceremony at his ancestral home.
The burial began with a requiem Mass led by Fr Steven Kijambu of Kiziba Parish, who urged mourners to live lives worthy of remembrance.
He described Kitone as a dedicated young man whose work touched many and whose conduct reflected strong values.
Speaking on behalf of Next Media, news editor Ismael Ssembatya praised Kitone’s work ethic, creativity and commitment to journalism, encouraging fellow reporters to emulate his discipline and passion for service.
He said Kitone consistently demonstrated a desire to grow professionally and improve his livelihood through innovation and hard work.
Journalists who attended the burial condemned reckless driving on Ugandan roads, describing his death as a painful reminder of the dangers posed by careless motorists.
Kitone perished along with seven others on Friday, February 13, when the driver of a commuter taxi he was travelling in allegedly overtook recklessly at a corner, leading to a fatal head-on collision with an oncoming truck.
Journalists called on government authorities to strengthen road safety enforcement to protect lives.
Mityana Woman Member of Parliament Joyce Bagala, who previously worked with the deceased, described Kitone as dependable and respectful.
“He was committed to his work and respectful to everyone he interacted with,” she said.
The spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan Police, Luke Owoyesigyire, praised Kitone’s professionalism and cooperation with security agencies while executing his duties.
He also condemned the theft of road signage and appealed to motorists to exercise caution while driving.
Family members described Kitone as a strong pillar and a source of pride. His siblings said he was obedient, supportive and instrumental in uplifting the family.
They thanked Next Media for giving him the opportunity to grow and serve through journalism.
Mourners said Kitone leaves behind a legacy of integrity and service, particularly among the people of Ntantamuki, where he was born and raised.
He leaves behind young children.
As the sun set over Kiteredde Village at about 4pm, Kitone was laid to rest, bringing to a close a life remembered for dedication, humility and service to the nation.
