Kyambogo University has taken disciplinary action against 17 students—including Guild President Benjamin Akiso—following a protest over tuition-related concerns. The university alleges that the students played key roles in a demonstration that disrupted normal academic activities.
In a statement issued on April 29, the university said the suspensions were effective immediately and would last for one month, pending formal disciplinary proceedings.

The protest, which occurred on April 23, was reportedly in opposition to what students described as unfair tuition policies. According to the university, the demonstration caused significant interruptions to campus operations.
“Under Regulation 40 of the Students’ Code of Conduct, the listed students have been suspended for participating in activities that interfered with university functions,” the statement noted.
The suspended students are barred from accessing university facilities during the suspension period. The group includes: Benjamin Akiso, John Owor Masanja, Timothy Mwesigwa, Ian Kiptoo Nickson Cheywa, Joel Vincent Washitwaya, Winnie Nansenja, Alfred Moro, Maktum Kajubi, Abel Murozi, Hillary Namanya Bashaija, Wahab Muguluma, Asaph Muganzi, Emmanuel Okello, Paul Kiwumulo, Evalyn Kabuni, and Muhammed Kavemba.

Letters issued individually to the affected students—signed by Vice Chancellor Prof. Eli Katunguka and dated April 28—list several violations, including allegedly inciting violence, disrupting lectures, and engaging in destructive behavior such as burning tyres outside the university’s Banda campus entrance.
The university emphasized that these actions breached student regulations and warranted immediate disciplinary action to preserve order on campus.
