KAMPALA.
Makerere University has formally dissolved the 91st Guild Cabinet and the Guild Representative Council.
The decision marks the end of the current student leadership’s term led by Churchill Ssentamu, and ushering the institution into a transitional phase ahead of the next guild administration.
In a communication issued on Friday, the Office of the Dean of Students confirmed that the decision took effect on March 5, 2026, in line with the Makerere University Students’ Guild Statute 2022.
Dr. Winifred Kabumbuli, the Dean of Students, said the move follows the legal provisions governing the tenure of the guild leadership.

“I am writing to inform you that, in accordance with the Makerere University Students’ Guild Statute 2022 Article 11 ( ) and (g) the decision has been made to dissolve the current Students Guild Cabinet and Guild Representative Council, and other Guild organs with the exception of the Guild Tribunal effective 05th March, 2026 after the end of their term of office,” Kabumbuli said in the notice addressed to all students.
The development effectively disbands the key student governance structures that have been responsible for representing the interests of students during the tenure of the 91st Guild government.
However, the Guild Tribunal will remain operational during the transition period.
According to Kabumbuli, the tribunal will continue serving as the institution through which students can raise complaints and seek redress until the new Guild Representative Council convenes.
“The Guild Tribunal will continue to operate as usual and will provide a platform for students to raise concerns and grievances in a fair and impartial manner until the second sitting of the next Guild Representative Council in accordance with Article 12(d) of the Makerere University Students’ Guild Statute 2022,” she said.

With the dissolution now in effect, the management of guild affairs will temporarily shift to the university administration working together with the Guild Electoral Commission.
“In the meantime, all affairs the Student Guild shall be handled by the Electoral Commission with the University Management through the Department of the Dean of Students in accordance with article 110 of the Makerere University Students Guild Statute 2022,” Kabumbuli noted.
The university also used the opportunity to appreciate the outgoing guild leadership for their service during their term.
“We thank the outgoing Student Guild Leadership for their service and dedication during their term of office, and we wish them all the best in their future endeavours ,” Kabumbuli said.
The dissolution sets the stage for a new electoral cycle that will eventually produce the 92nd Guild leadership at Makerere University, one of the most closely watched student political processes in the country.
