Makindye East MP Derrick Nyeko withdraws from next year’s race

KAMPALA. Makindye East legislator Derrick Nyeko who subscribes to opposition National Unity Platform party (NUP) has dramatically taken a decision not to defend his seat in next year’s General Elections citing personal concerns .

In a post on his X handle Tuesday morning , the youthful legislator , said though the decision was painful to him and his supporters , he had to do so after a deep reflection for the good of his party –NUP and the wider quest to cause political change in the country .

“I wish to extend my deepest gratitude to all who have believed in me throughout the years I have been entrusted with leadership. It is with a heart full of joy that I have served you with honour, respect, and a deep commitment never to betray the trust of your vote.

I know this decision may not be easy for my team and supporters to receive, especially after our strong belief that we would once again win the Makindye East MP seat,’’ He said ,adding “However, after deep reflection, I have made the difficult decision not to offer myself for election in the coming polls. This choice does not diminish the journey we have walked together, nor the victories we have achieved. It is my hope that the spirit of unity, resilience, and service to our people will remain stronger than ever. I remain the man of no corruption, no problems. With humility and gratitude.”

However , insiders in NUP say ,Mr Nyeko took the decision following mounting pressure from top party ranks who accuse him of having failed to perform to the expectations of the voters in Makindye East in the past five years .

He is also accused of not being loyal to the party and hobnobbing some with well connected individuals in the government. A source at NUP headquarters in Makerere- Kavule intimated to this publication that Mr Nyeko got wind of the decision the party Election Management Committee (EMC) is yet to make (of not giving him the ticket) and made the quick announcement to avoid embarrassment .

The EMC is any time this week expected to release a list of all party flag bearers for various parliamentary seats across the country ahead of nominations by the Uganda Electoral Commission next week .
