MTN MoMo has launched a major cleaning and beautification campaign at Lira Main Market after taking over responsibility for supporting the market’s renewal in partnership with Lira City authorities. The initiative, flagged off on November 19, is part of efforts to improve hygiene, boost business activity and modernise one of the region’s busiest trading centres.
The drive saw MTN MoMo teams join market leaders and vendors in clearing garbage, scrubbing walkways, organising stalls and refreshing the market environment through painting and new signage. The activity forms part of MTN MoMo’s “Market by MoMo Yiino” campaign, which aims to integrate digital financial services into vibrant, well maintained market spaces.
Speaking during the launch, Phillip Odoi, MTN Uganda’s Regional Commercial Head, emphasised the significance of the collaboration.
“MTN MoMo believes in meaningful partnerships. We are here to work with the people of Lira to build a market environment that is safe, clean and supportive of business,” he said.
Lira City Mayor Sam Atul welcomed the intervention, noting that the market’s appearance plays a central role in the city’s identity.
“Our goal is to beautify Lira City, and this partnership fits perfectly into that mission,” he said.
The initiative is expected to encourage better sanitation practices among vendors and attract more customers by creating a cleaner, more organised trading space. It also aligns with the city’s broader urban renewal plans aimed at restoring order, improving waste management and enhancing the overall business climate.
