MTN Uganda Sets Pace in Telecom ESG Reporting

MTN Uganda has taken a bold step in redefining corporate responsibility by becoming the first telecom operator in the country to publish a full Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Sustainability Report. The release positions the company as a leader in sustainable business practices within Uganda’s telecommunications sector.

Launching the report in Kampala, MTN Uganda Chief Executive Officer Sylvia Mulinge said the move reflects the company’s long-term commitment to creating shared value.

“This report is more than figures and targets. It shows how MTN is deliberately using its scale to make a positive impact on people, communities, and the planet,” she noted.

The report highlights MTN’s investments in renewable energy, including deployment of clean power solutions across its network sites. This has led to significant cuts in carbon emissions.

“Sustainability is not a side activity; it is part of our business strategy. By greening our operations, we are also supporting Uganda’s climate change agenda,” Mulinge added.

The company also underscored its commitment to bridging the digital divide. Expanded 4G and 5G coverage, together with innovations on MTN MoMo, have increased access to affordable internet and financial services.

MTN Foundation programs in education and youth empowerment were also spotlighted. “From equipping ICT resource centres to training young people in digital skills, we are enabling communities to thrive in the digital economy,” said MTN Uganda Foundation General Manager, Barbara Kiwanuka.

According to the report, MTN’s local supplier spending has grown steadily, ensuring more Ugandan businesses benefit from its supply chain. Thousands of indirect jobs have also been supported through vendors, agents, and distributors.

By publishing its sustainability report, MTN has set a precedent in Uganda’s telecom industry. Analysts say the move is likely to inspire other players to adopt similar ESG practices, raising the bar for accountability in the sector.

“MTN has shown that profitability can go hand in hand with environmental protection, social responsibility, and strong governance. This is the kind of leadership Uganda needs,” noted an industry analyst during the launch.
