Uganda’s film industry has received a major boost after MultiChoice Uganda, in partnership with the National Producers Guild, trained 150 local film producers in essential business management skills.
The initiative sought to bridge the gap between creativity and entrepreneurship by equipping filmmakers with knowledge on budgeting, financial planning, marketing, and distribution skills considered critical for building a sustainable and professional film sector.
Organisers noted that while Ugandan filmmakers have earned recognition for their creativity and storytelling, many struggle with the commercial side of the business. This training is expected to change that dynamic by enabling producers to manage their productions more efficiently and attract investors.
Mathew Nabwiso, President of the National Producers Guild, described the training as timely and transformative.
“Workshops such as the one we have held today are very important in growing the creative industry in Uganda, especially with the fast pace at which it is expanding. As the guild, we strive to represent, support, and advocate for Ugandan producers in film and television. This workshop is aimed at strengthening their knowledge of the business and fostering an environment where they can network with each other,” he said.
Speaking during the sessions, officials from MultiChoice Uganda emphasized the company’s long-term commitment to nurturing local talent and strengthening the country’s creative economy. “Great films are not only about ideas and performance, but they also need strong business foundations. This program ensures our producers can thrive both creatively and commercially,” one official said.
Representatives from the Producers Guild added that professional producers are better positioned to create jobs, generate revenue, and tell authentic Ugandan stories on bigger platforms.
For the 150 beneficiaries, the program marked a turning point in their careers. Many expressed optimism that the skills acquired would help them transform their passion projects into sustainable enterprises.
The partnership between MultiChoice Uganda and the Producers Guild reflects broader efforts to professionalize the local creative industry, ensuring that Uganda’s growing film community not only entertains but also thrives as a key contributor to the national economy.
