KAYUNGA.
Ntenjeru North MP-elect Patrick Nsanja has claimed that Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) soldiers on Friday night raided his home at Kirindi Village, Nazigo Sub-county in Kayunga District in search of National Unity Platform (NUP) president, Mr Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, whose whereabouts are unknown.
Mr Kyagulanyi fled his home in Magere, Wakiso District, on January 16, 2026, after a night raid by the military following the January 15 General Election in which the Electoral Commission announced President Museveni the winner with 7,946,772 votes (71.65 per cent).
Mr Kyagulanyi finished second with 2,741,238 votes (24.72 per cent).Mr Kyagulanyi rejected the results as “fake” due to reported mass failure of the Biometric Voter Verification Machines countrywide, arrests and intimidation of opposition polling agents, ballot stuffing, among others.
Mr Nsanja, a member of NUP, is one of Mr Kyagulanyi’s confidants. Mr Nsanja, throughout the presidential campaigns, moved with the NUP principal across the country as he canvassed for support ahead of the tense January 15 presidential and parliamentary elections held under an internet blackout.
However, soon after the presidential elections were held, security sieged Mr Kyagulanyi’s, a move the government said was intended to provide security to the former presidential candidate. However, Mr Kyagulanyi’s wife, Barbie Itungo, reported being assaulted by the military officers who broke into her house on the night of January 23, looking for her husband.
Although President Museveni’s son, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who acts as the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) admitted the military had raided Mr Kyagulanyi’s home, he denied assaulting his wife, who, after the attack, was admitted to hospital overnight.
Several NUP supporters have reported their homes being raided by the military and questioned about Mr Kyagulanyi’s whereabouts.Ms Vivian Namakobe, a younger sister to Mr Nsanja, said that the armed soldiers raided their home at around 10 pm on Friday and found them in the sitting room.
“We were shocked when the soldiers raided our home, surrounded it and asked us whether we knew where Bobi Wine was. We explained to them that we did not know his whereabouts,” Ms Namakobe said.Ms Namakobe disclosed that at the time of the military raid, her brother was not at home.
“I honestly also don’t know where the man is. As a NUP supporter, I cannot tell where he (Kyagulanyi) is now,” Mr Nsanja told this reporter on the phone before noting that “security is closely monitoring my movements and phone calls.”Mr Stephen Mutyaba, the Kirindi village chairman, said that after raiding the MP’s home, the soldiers stormed a local bar and threatened patrons, forcing them to flee. The incident, Mr Mutyaba said, has since created fear among residents.
“We have never seen Bobi Wine here at our home. Because of the incident, we now fear they (soldiers) will come back and raid our home,” Ms Namakobe said on Sunday.Mr Isma Kulube, another relative of the legislator, said that after the futile raid at the home, the soldiers fired live bullets into the air before storming HD Sports Bar, which is in the vicinity.
“Residents in the trading centre locked themselves in their houses while others who were still outside took off as gunfire rocked the area,’ Mr Kulube said. They left the area at around 1 am on Saturday. Our attempts to get a comment from the UPDF failed as the Force’s acting director of communication, Col Chris Magezi, was engaged by press time. However, Ms Hellen Butoto, the Ssezibwa region police spokesperson, said she had not received any briefing about the said raid.
