Nakibinge Calls for Accountability Over Butambala Killings, Urges Unity and Responsibility

By Nasser Kayanja
The Titular Head of Muslims in Uganda, Dr. Prince Kassim Nakibinge, has called on the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to push the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to ensure justice for the victims of the Butambala shooting.

Delivering his Eid message after prayers at his residence in Kampala, Nakibinge expressed concern over the deaths of ten people who were shot on the eve of election day in Butambala under unclear circumstances. He urged authorities to thoroughly investigate the incident and hold those responsible accountable.

Nakibinge also cautioned against victimization during Uganda’s electoral processes, describing them as increasingly problematic. He appealed to cultural leaders, religious figures, the media, and opinion leaders not to remain silent in the face of injustice, including issues such as political imprisonment and alleged torture, but instead to speak out for the safety and rights of citizens.

On civic matters, he called upon officials from the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) to fulfill their duties by addressing poor waste management and urgently resolving the persistent drainage challenges in Nakivubo, which have led to flooding. He further urged compensation for traders affected by these conditions.

In a related message, Sheikh Ahmad Rabila Dactur encouraged Muslims to remain committed to the teachings of Allah and the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Speaking during a sermon at Wandegeya Mosque, he emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and continuing good deeds beyond Ramadan, including observing the six recommended days of fasting after Eid.

Meanwhile, Imam Sheikh Kasule called on those who are able to support the less fortunate, urging the community to ensure that everyone can share in the joy of Eid rather than being left behind.
