NRM declares Nsubuga as Kampala Lord Mayor flag bearer to faceoff with Lukwaga

KAMPALA. The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) Election Disputes Tribunal has overturned the victory of Mahad Kaweesa as the party’s flag bearer for the position of Kampala Lord Mayor in next year’s General Elections.

The tribunal’s decision follows a petition filed by Mr Moses Kizito Nsubuga challenging Kaweesa’s victory.
Nsubuga came second in the race that attracted eight candidates.
In the petition, Nsubuga cited various irregularities, including the alleged forgery of academic documents, electoral malpractices, and voter bribery, among others.

In its ruling, the tribunal concurred with the grounds put forward by the petitioner and declared Nsubuga as the right candidate.

Nsubuga is not the only candidate that challenged the outcome of the vote.
Kampala City Traders Association (Kacita ) chairperson Mr Thadeus Musoke, who came third in the race, also contested the election results.

Speaking to journalists on Kampala on Tuesday,Mr Nsubuga said that the ruling by the party tribunal had salvaged his victory .
“At last, the people of Kampala have got their own. It is time to see how the will of the people works. We have been here, and we have seen the rule of law; it is time to see the will of the people,” he said.

Kampala, like many other urban areas in Uganda, is an opposition stronghold and most leadership positions are occupied by their members . Mr Nsubuga will now tussle it out with the incumbent Mr Erias Lukwago who will stand on the ticket of the newly formed Peoples Front for Freedom party .

The National Unity Platform (NUP), has already endorsed Nakawa East MP and former Nakawa Division Mayor Eng. Ronald Balimwezo to hold its flag for Lord Mayor seat .
