
WAKISO. The opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) has dumped its incumbent flag bearer for Nansana Municipality Mayoral seat Ms Regina Bakitte and handed the ticket to John Bosco Sserunkuuma .
During the previous General Election , Sserunkuuma , a NUP die-hard was elected councilor representing Nansana West Ward in Nansana Municipality while in incarceration at Kitalya Prison in Wakiso District.
He is one of the supporters of NUP who were arrested in Kalangala District in December 2020 when security blocked Robert Kyagulanyi from campaigning in the island district .
Although he was granted bail by the court, he was rearrested and paraded before the Military Court in Makindye, where he, and several others were charged with possession of military stores ,but was later granted bail .
While he was in prison ,Sserunkuma managed to obtain 2,343 Votes while his main challenger Kibirige Kasule of the Democratic Party who collected only 480 votes. Insiders say he was handed the ticket because he is more loyal to the party and commands considerable grassroots support .
In Nansana Division , the ticket went to Keith Ssali while Kassim Jumba secured the ticket for Nabweru Division . Adiru Kato Mwanje and Ronald Kasiriivu won the tickets for Busukuma and Gombe divisions
