NUP’s Kyagera remanded over alleged forgery of nomination receipt

 MUBENDE. The Mubende Magistrate’s Court has ordered the remand of MrPeter Kyagera, the National Unity Platform (NUP) flag bearer for KassambyaConstituency, to Kaweeri Government Prison until November 13, 2025, followinghis arraignment on charges of forgery and uttering false documents. 

Appearing before the GradeI Magistrate’s Chambers, presided over by Acting Chief Magistrate Paul Kedi,Kyagera vehemently denied both counts — forgery contrary to Section 319 of thePenal Code Act, Cap 128, and uttering false documents contrary to Sections 324and 328 of the same law. Prosecution allegesthat on October 23, 2025, while seeking nomination at the Electoral Commissionoffices in Mubende, Kyagera knowingly presented a forged Uganda RevenueAuthority (URA) receipt purportedly confirming payment of Shs3 million innomination fees.

The said document, upon verification, was discovered to bear areceipt number identical to that previously issued to his political rival, MrDavid Kabanda.Mubende DistrictReturning Officer, Mr Ferdinand Tumwesigye, who intercepted the suspect duringthe nomination exercise, narrated that Kyagera initially claimed to have paidthe fees in cash at the Commission’s offices — a procedure he described asimpossible, since all payments are strictly remitted through the bankingsystem. 

“When pressed further,he altered his explanation, alleging that the transaction had instead been madeat his party’s headquarters. It was at that point that we alerted police, whoimmediately affected his arrest,” Mr Tumwesigye recounted, adding that the ElectoralCommission would await formal guidance from its headquarters before proceedingwith the nomination.

 Confirming theincident, the Wamala Regional Police Spokesperson said that the arrest occurredat around 4:00pm on October 23 at the Mubende Electoral Commission offices.Preliminary inquiries, he added, revealed that the 36-year-old resident ofBubanda Village, Mubende District, had submitted a counterfeit payment receipt,the authenticity of which was promptly discredited by the Commission’s verificationsystem. Police have sincerecovered the forged document as an exhibit.

After his detention at MubendeCentral Police Station, Kyagera was subsequently remanded to Kaweeri GovernmentPrison, where he will remain until the mention of his case on November 13,2025.
