Police have confirmed that one private security guard was been shot dead and another injured in a foiled robbery at Diamond Trust Bank’s Wakiso branch.
The deceased has been identified as Emmanuel Okao whereas the suspect who surrendered to police is Justine Okello, 27 .He is currently being detained in Wakiso Police Station.
The duo attached to G.K.O Security Company had been deployed to provide guarding services at the bank branch located at Wakiso-Busiro Land Zonal offices, a stone throw away from Wakiso District headquarters .
According to Mr Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, the incident happened in the wee hours of Sunday around 1:30am at Kkona East Village.
“After ordering the suspects to surrender, police attempted to dislodge them using tear gas. However, the robbers cocked their guns , prompting our officers to respond with gunfire, killing one suspect,” he said in an interview on Sunday .
He said the duo had an attempt to steal money from the bank. Additionally, two guns were also recovered at the scene.
“The two private security guards were assigned to the bank’s night shift and before this attempted robbery, they had removed their uniforms to facilitate escape,” He explained
However, according to the sources, the suspects broke into the bank through the ceiling in the washrooms and upon gaining access, they attempted to break the safe containing money- an incident that raised alarm that alerted police officers at Wakiso Police Station which is located in the same vicinity .
A press statement issued by Diamond Trust Bank, indicates that all bank properties are secure and safe.
“We are deeply grateful for the swift and professional actions of the security forces, which helped protect our premises,” the statement reads in part .
