Police arrest MP contestant’s father over theft of cow

SEMBABULE. Police in Sembabule District are holding two people for their alleged involvement in the theft of a cow.

The suspects in police custody have been identified as John Kanamuhanga and his colleague Mathias Nshemereire, a resident of Rutunku , Lugusulu sub county in Sembabule District. Mathias Nshemereire is the father of popular musician turned politician Nina Rosa Kankunda who is vying for Sembabule District Woman MP seat on the opposition National Unity Platform ticket .

It is said that the cow that was stolen over the weekend from Sembabule was taken to neigbouring Gomba District for sale where it was recovered by police following a tip off from an informer after being sighted at Nyamuhanga’s home before it was taken to the cattle market.

Preliminary police investigations indicate that on interrogation Nyamuhanga told police that he had gotten the cow from Nshemereire in Sembabule who could also not give convincing explanations about the ownership of the cow which prompted police to arrest the duo.

Southern Regional Police Spokesperson Twaha Kasirye confirmed the duos’ arrest saying they have recorded statements from the suspects which will aid police investigations into the matter.

“We condemn acts of theft more so when one of the suspects is ought to be respected since he is a father of a politician, known as Nina Rose who is contesting for a parliamentary seat, in the area police investigations are going on and when completed, they will be taken to court for prosecution”. He added.

The arrest of the duo however did not go well with Ms Kankunda who decided to protest the arrest of his father saying it was politically motivated.

Kankunda together with her relatives decided to pitch camp at Sembabule police station, missing the first day of her campaigns which were supposed to start from Lwemiyaga sub county in Sembabule District.

“The case is politically motivated, they claim the cow was stolen from President Musevenis’ farm, why don’t they use the CCTV camera at the farm to establish if any cattle are missing from the farm,” she demanded.

Others in the Sembabule woman MP race are Florence Nambaziira of National Resistance Movement, independent Mary Begumisa who is the incumbent.
