Police reassure public of security, confirm arrests ahead of upcoming polls

The Uganda Police Force has confirmed the arrest of several individuals over suspected election related offences while assuring the public that security agencies are fully prepared to maintain calm and safety ahead of the upcoming polls.

Police said the arrests followed intelligence led operations targeting activities believed to have the potential to disrupt the electoral process. The suspects are currently in custody as investigations continue.

Speaking on the matter, police spokesperson ACP Kituuma Rusoke said the security situation across the country remains generally calm adding that deployments have been reinforced in key areas to prevent violence, intimidation and other unlawful acts linked to the polls.

“The public should remain calm and continue with their normal activities. The police and other security agencies are fully deployed to safeguard lives, property and ensure a peaceful electoral process,” Kituuma said.

He emphasized that the police will not tolerate actions that undermine public order or the integrity of the electoral process, warning that individuals found engaging in election related offences will be dealt with in accordance with the law.

Kituuma also urged political actors and their supporters to comply with electoral guidelines and to channel any grievances through lawful and established mechanisms.

As the polling period approaches, police called on members of the public to cooperate with security personnel and to report any suspicious activity. Authorities reiterated that Ugandans will be able to exercise their democratic rights in a safe and secure environment.
