
As Uganda prepares to commemorate Martyrs Day on 3rd June 2025, the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety has issued a detailed Traffic Management Plan to ensure the safe and smooth movement of pilgrims and dignitaries heading to the Catholic Basilica and Protestant Church at Namugongo.
Traffic Restrictions Will Be Effective From 3:00 AM to 4:00 PM on 3rd June 2025.
Below is a summary of key traffic arrangements and guidelines issued by SP Michael Kananura, Communications Officer at the Traffic Directorate:
Traffic Flow Arrangements
- Jinja – Kampala Highway: Normal traffic flow.
- Kireka – Kyaliwajjala Road: One-way traffic towards Namugongo.
- Kyaliwajjala – Naalya Interchange: One-way towards Kyaliwajjala.
- Kyaliwajjala Trading Center to Catholic Church:
- Pedestrians: Keep to the right side of the road.
- Left side reserved for VVIPS and emergency vehicles.

Access and Parking – Special Groups
- VIPs:
- Red sticker vehicles heading to Catholic Church: Use Ssemambo Road via Kyaliwajjala and park at Namugongo Boarding Primary School.
- VIPs heading to Protestant Church: Use Bweyogerere – Butto – Kyobe Road and park at the Church Farm.
- Foreign Pilgrims (Blue Stickers): Drop-off at Kyaliwajjala Trading Center, parking at Vienna College.
- Medical Vehicles (Green Stickers): Must display stickers clearly for priority access.
- Service Providers (Purple Stickers):
- Access venue via St. Kizito Lwanga Road (Namugongo Police Station).
- Arrival window: By midnight of 3rd June. No access granted past midnight.
Pilgrim Access Points
- Mamre International Prayer Centre: Access via Bweyogerere – Butto – Kyobe Road.
- Northern Bypass Pilgrims: Park at Hillside Nursery and Primary School.
- Pilgrims from Ntinda, Kiwatule, Najjera, Kasangati: Park at Kiira Town Council Playground or Mayor’s Garden.
- Eastern Route Pilgrims (to Protestant Church): Use Seeta – Sonde – Bweyogerere – Butto – Kyobe Road, park at Church Farm.
❌ Prohibited and Restricted Zones
- No access without official stickers past designated cut-off points.
- No public parking at the Catholic or Protestant churches.
- Taxi stages at Kyaliwajjala, Sonde, Naalya, and Namugongo roads will be non-operational. Any taxi found at these locations will be impounded.
- Vehicles abandoned on designated routes will be towed at the owner’s cost.
