VATICAN CITY — Pope Leo XIV has strongly condemned the ongoing war involving Iran, describing it as “unjust” and ineffective in resolving the underlying issues fueling the conflict.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the Pope warned that the war is only deepening human suffering while failing to deliver any meaningful solution. He expressed grave concern over the humanitarian toll, particularly on vulnerable populations, saying women and children are bearing the brunt of the violence.

The pontiff also appeared to criticize actions attributed to Donald Trump, suggesting that attacks on civilian infrastructure could amount to war crimes under international law. He urged restraint and adherence to global humanitarian standards, emphasizing the need to protect innocent lives at all costs.

Addressing citizens in the United States, the Pope called on the public to engage their elected representatives and push for an end to the war, highlighting the role of civic action in shaping foreign policy decisions.

Beyond the immediate violence, the Pope warned of broader consequences, noting that the conflict is increasingly triggering economic instability and a growing refugee crisis across the region. He cautioned that prolonged fighting risks further destabilizing global systems and worsening human displacement.

The Vatican’s message concluded with a direct appeal to all parties involved to cease hostilities and return to dialogue, stressing that peace remains the only viable path forward.
