A total of seven people died in a multiple motor crashes Thursday morning at Kinoni along the Jinja-Kampala highway in Mabira Central Forest Reserve .
According to Mabira Traffic Police, the crash occurred at approximately 7:40 a.m and involved three vehicles. An Isuzu ELF, registration UA050BZ, driven by 30-year-old Mpandi Paul from Namawojjolo in Mukono District, was traveling from Kampala when it experienced a brake failure while descending a straight slope at Kinoni. The vehicle veered into the opposite lane and collided head-on with a white Toyota Hiace, registration UBQ729D. The driver of the Hiace, who remained unidentified at the scene, died instantly.
The Isuzu then struck the rear of a second Toyota Hiace, registration UBR511N, a public service vehicle driven by 43-year-old Kasoma Swaibu of Kireka, Wakiso District, pushing it into a roadside trench before overturning onto its side.
All passengers in the UBQ729D Hiace reportedly perished in the crash. The victims have been identified as Oguta David Junior, 45, of Bugembe, Jinja City; Kamale Badru, 30, of Kaleerwe Kiibe Zone, Kampala City; Sseluwagi Yusuf, 45, of Busia; Mugenyi Emmanuel, 30, of Entebbe; Kyomugisha Shivani, 19, of Kilyowa, Buikwe District; Musoke Medieval, 40, of Mutundwe, Kampala City; and Nakibule Flavia, 27, of Busia.
Police confirmed that the deceased include the unidentified driver of the UBQ729D Hiace along with six passengers. The injured were rushed to Kawolo Hospital, where two unidentified bodies were admitted to the mortuary for postmortem examinations. Mpandi Paul, the driver of the Isuzu ELF, is currently in police custody as investigations continue.
Regional Police Spokesperson for Ssezibwa Region, SP Hellen Butoto, said inquiries are ongoing to determine the full circumstances of the accident. Authorities have warned motorists to exercise extreme caution along the busy Jinja-Kampala highway, particularly on steep slopes and during morning hours when traffic is heavy.
This tragic incident highlights persistent road safety challenges on Uganda’s highways, underscoring the need for proper vehicle maintenance, driver vigilance, and strict adherence to traffic regulations to prevent further loss of life.
