KAYUNGA .
Opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) party supporters and locals in Kayunga District are mourning the tragic deaths of Councilor Peter Lukwago, his wife Dorah Nawagi, and their seven-year-old child, who were killed in a tragic road accident along the Mukono–Kayunga road on Monday.
Lukwago, who was representing Nsotoka Parish in Kayunga Sub-county, died on the spot along with his family after a speeding Toyota Wish vehicle (registration number UBC 311B) lost control and crashed into their motorcycle at Namaliiri Village .
The accident also claimed the life of another motorcycle rider who was travelling alongside the family. A child who was riding with him survived but sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving treatment at Kayunga Regional Referral Hospital.
According to eyewitnesses, the ill-fated vehicle was speeding when one of its tyres burst, causing the driver to lose control. The car swerved into the lane the two motorcycles were using , killing four people on spot .
A traffic officer at the scene, who declined to be named as they are not authorised to speak to the press, blamed the accident on reckless driving, noting that speeding and failure to maintain the vehicle’s tyres were contributing factors.
Mr Patrick Sserubiri, NUP’s Kayunga District chairperson, described the late Lukwago as a “committed party activist who was determined to cause change in the country.”
The loss has shaken the Kayunga community, with residents demanding urgent government action on road safety and better maintenance of high-risk roads like the Mukono–Kayunga Road , which has recorded numerous fatal accidents in recent years.
