Pupils and teachers of Rwengiri Primary School in Kigarama Sub-county, Sheema District are yet to come to terms with a lightning incident that stuck the school and left two pupils dead .
The Monday afternoon incident also left 14 other pupils injured.
Police have identified the victims as Isabellah Kemigisha, a Primary Three pupil, and Benson Bainomugisha, a Primary One pupil. The incident occurred at around 3:00 pm during heavy down pour when pupils were attending lessons.
According to Mr Benards Bangirana , the head teacher of Rwengiri Primary School, the 14 survivors are still admitted at Bushenyi Medical Centre (BMC) located in Sheema Municipality .
“Unfortunately one of the pupils died on spot and the second passed away at the hospital.
The other 14 suffered serious injuries and are currently receiving treatment at a private health facility ,” Mr Bangirana said in an interview on Friday
Mr Bangirana also expressed gratitude to residents who help in evacuating the injured pupils .
“We thank Sheema District LCV Chairperson Ms Jemima Buhanda for donating two coffins, and Hon. Dr Elioda Tumwesigye for covering the medical costs of all the injured,” he said.
Apollo Tayebwa, the police spokesperson for Greater Bushenyi said investigations into the incident are underway. “We join the school and parents in mourning for the loss of the innocent souls ,the information we are receiving is that the injured are now out of danger ” SP Tayebwa said.
