
Police in Greater Luweero are investigating circumstances under which two men were brutally murdered in separate machete attacks on Monday evening.
The first attack claimed the life of Jackson Sserumpanise, a 36-year-old taxi conductor, who was fatally hacked at Fortbet betting center in Wobulenzi Town, Luwero District, at approximately 8:30pm on December 8, 2025.
According to police, Sserumpanise, a resident of Kikoma Village, was attacked by a man identified as Masudi Serugo, who was armed with a machete . The weapon inflicted severe wounds that resulted in the conductor’s immediate death at the scene.
The suspect fled to Wobulenzi Police Station to escape angry residents who wanted to lynch him. He is now in custody.
According to Sam Twiineamazima, the Police Public Relations Officer for Savannah Region, Serugo turned himself in immediately after the incident .
“Following the incident, the suspect voluntarily reported to Wobulenzi Police station and was taken into custody,” he said.
Sserumpanise’s body was transferred to Luweero Hospital for post-mortem while police teams documented the crime scene and recorded witness statements from patrons who were present at the betting center during the attack.
Second Attack in Nakasongola
In a frightening coincidence, at exactly the same time, another deadly attack occurred approximately 50 kilometers away in Nakasongola District.
John Sserunkuma, a 55-year-old resident of Kakondi Village in Saasira Parish, Wabinyonyi Sub County, was ambushed by unknown assailants while at a bath shelter near his home. The attackers, whose identities remain unknown, used a panga to inflict severe injuries to the victim’s neck.
Despite his critical condition, Sserunkuma managed to stumble back toward his dwelling in a desperate attempt to seek help. However, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after the attack, collapsing before he could receive medical attention.
Police have launched a manhunt for the assailants.
Police homicide teams and scene of crime officers have been deployed to both locations to gather evidence and piece together the circumstances surrounding the attacks.
In Nakasongola, investigators conducted a thorough examination of the crime scene on Monday night, with plans for further investigations at first light on Tuesday morning. Sserunkuma’s body was transported to Nakasongola Health Center IV for post-mortem examination.
“Police responded promptly, conducting a thorough investigation of the crime scene. The area was examined and documented by the homicide team and scenes of crime officers,” Twiineamazima stated. “No evidence or suspects have been identified at this time. The police are actively pursuing inquiries to apprehend those responsible.”
The police spokesperson emphasized that both investigations are being treated with utmost priority, given the brutal nature of the attacks and their occurrence within the same timeframe.
“Police teams have visited the scene, documented the circumstances, and recorded witness statements to aid the ongoing investigation,” ASP Twiineamazima said regarding the Wobulenzi incident. “Further updates will be provided as the investigation continues.”
Authorities are appealing to the public, particularly Nakasongola residents, to provide any information that could assist in apprehending the second killer.
“The community is urged to cooperate with authorities by providing any information that may assist in this investigation,” Twiineamazima said, adding that further updates will be provided as investigations continue.
