Road Safety Concerns
The Bweyogerere crash comes just a day after another high-profile fatal accident on the Kampala–Gulu Highway that killed 63 people, raising renewed alarm over road safety in Uganda.
According to the Uganda Police Annual Crime Report 2024, the country recorded 25,107 road crashes in 2024, an increase of 6.4% from 2023.

Out of these, 4,434 were fatal, and total casualties (dead and injured) reached 25,808.
Speeding, dangerous overtaking, and careless driving remain the leading causes of crashes — with public service vehicles and boda bodas accounting for a high percentage of fatalities, particularly in urban areas.

The Ministry of Works and Transport has committed to intensifying its road safety interventions, including the rollout of the Intelligent Transport Monitoring System (ITMS) to curb speeding and identify reckless drivers.
