South Sudan new cabinet sworn in

JUBA. President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Wednesday presided over the swearing-in of the newly appointed Vice President and several key ministers appointed on Tuesday this week.

Dr. James Wani Igga, a veteran politician and one of the founding members of the SPLM, was sworn in as Vice President and Chairperson of the Economic Cluster. Taking the oath before Chief Justice Chan Reec Madut, Dr. Igga pledged to steer the country’s economic recovery agenda focusing on oil revenue management, agriculture revitalisation, and infrastructure development. He replaced Dr. Benjamin Bol Mel who was recently fired from the VP position, the ruling SPLM party leadership and the national security service.

Hon. Mabior Garang de Mabior, son of the late Dr. John Garang de Mabior, took the oath as Minister of Environment and Forestry while Hon. Ateny Wek Ateny was sworn in as Minister of Information, Communication Technology and Postal Services. The outspoken former Presidential Press Secretary assured the nation that his ministry would work to expand digital infrastructure and ensure reliable information flow across the young republic.

Ambassador Monica Achol Abel Aguek, a seasoned diplomat, was installed as Presidential Envoy to the Middle East, tasked with strengthening bilateral ties and attracting investment from Gulf countries. The ceremony also saw Hon. Michael Makuei Lueth sworn in as Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, while Hon. Peter Lam Both took the oath as the new Minister of Roads and Bridges.
