KAMPALA. The long-awaited Malaba–Kampala Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) corridor is projected to create 20,000 jobs .
According to Mr Allan Ssempwebwa , a senior commissions officer at Ministry of Works and Transport , some of the expected jobs will be direct while others will be indirect .

“With a contractor now firmly on ground , 60 percent of the land acquired for works ,the SGR has the needed resources to begin,” Mr Ssempebwa posted his X (formerly Twitter)
He said the SGR will reduce travel time from Mombasa to Kampala from 10- 14 days to one day .

Last month , government announced that the contractor , Turkish engineering firm Yapı Merkezi has commenced geotechnical surveys and infrastructure mapping along the proposed 273-kilometre Malaba–Kampala Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) corridor.

This marked the first tangible steps toward construction of one of Uganda’s most ambitious infrastructure projects.

The preparatory works, underway just eight months after the ceremonial groundbreaking in November 2024, include detailed geotechnical surveys, community engagement, and mapping of infrastructure and support sites along the route.

Once complete, the SGR is expected to halve the cost of transporting goods between Mombasa and Kampala, reduce transit times from up to two weeks to under 12 hours, and enable the movement of up to 25 million tonnes of cargo annually.
