Atleast three people have been confirmed dead in a motor crash in the heart of Mukono Town.
The Tuesday evening crash occurred that occurred at Anthony Junction along Jinja Highway .
According to the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, CLO SP Michael Kananura says the fatal accident involved four vehicles Mitsubishi UBB 422/U, UBP 359/W (Toyota Hiace) UAW 042/E (Toyota Hiace) and UAQ 398/L (Toyota Hiace) along with five motor cycles UFL 976/T Bajaj, UFN 916/P TVS, UEU 698/W Bajaj, UDK 495/B-Bajaj and UDZ 777/A-Bajaj.
“Preliminary investigations indicate the driver of Mitsubishi Fuso truck UBB 422/U reportedly lost control at Anthony junction, veering into the opposite lane and the truck crashed into several vehicles and road side food vendors resulting into instant death of three individuals and injuring ten others including pedestrians, motorcycle riders, drivers and vehicle passengers” the police report reads in parts
The injured were rushed to various hospitals including Mukono General Hospital, Namirembe Church of Uganda Hospital among others while bodies were taken to Kawolo Hospital mortuary for Postmortem examination.
Vehicles and motorcycles involved in the crash were towed to Mukono Police Station parking yard awaiting inspection .
Eye witnesses have expressed concerns over the increasing number of motor crashes along Kampala – Jinja highway calling for deliberate effort to cut down the carnage .
Jumah Nsereko, one of the survivors running a Chapatti stall at the accident spot recalls the disheartening scene that happened causing loss of lives, destruction of businesses and vehicles leaving everyone in great despair.
“It was so heartbreaking seeing a child beheaded at the scene of the accident, such moments and trauma can’t just leave our minds. We implore the investigations departments at police to probe the matter to the latter” Nsereko explained.
