
LUWEERO.Altleast twelve people have been injured in a motor crash involving a passenger bus along the busy Kampala–Gulu Highway.
According to The Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS) , the crash occurred at around 9:40 a.m. on Tuesday at Kakinzi in Luwero District and involved a Zawadi bus carrying 65 passengers, triggering a mass casualty situation.
“A total of 12 casualties were recorded at the scene,” the Red Cross said in a statement. “After triage, three casualties were classified as yellow (delayed) while nine were classified as green (minor).”
The injured sustained upper limb fractures, pelvic fractures, deep cut wounds and chest trauma, according to emergency responders.
All casualties were stabilized on site and later evacuated for further medical care.
The response was complicated by heavy traffic congestion and large crowds, which limited access to the scene along the highway, one of Uganda’s busiest transport corridors.
Emergency evacuation was carried out using one Uganda Red Cross ambulance, one Luwero District ambulance and a police pickup vehicle, with all casualties transferred to Luwero General Hospital for further medical management.URCS declared the crash a major incident due to the number of casualties involved.
The incident comes amid persistent concerns over road safety in Uganda.
According to the 2024 Annual Traffic and Road Safety Report, the country records more than 20,000 road crashes annually, resulting in over 4,500 deaths and tens of thousands of injuries.
