Two suspected terrorists killed in Munyonyo-UPDF

The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has confirmed two deaths of suspected terrorists near Munyonyo Basilica, one of the key sites for Uganda Martyrs.
The explosion went off at around 9am as thousands of pilgrims had gathered for the religious commemoration,(Martyrs Day) celebrations which falls June 3.


Remains of two suspected suicide bombers were found at the scene alongside the wreckage of a destroyed motorcycle.
Security forces, including the military and the police bomb squad, swiftly rushed to the scene, which has since been cordoned off as investigations begin.


In statement on Tuesday morning , the acting director Defence Public Information Chris Magezi , said a UPDF counter-terrorism unit had intercepted and neutralized two terrorists .
“It was an intelligence led operation ,and the security services are on heightened alert to ensure the Martyrs Day celebrations proceed without disruption,” he said


He urged the public to remain claim ,but vigilant and report to the security services any suspicious individuals ,objects or activities for immediate attention .
By 10am , forensic teams were still combing the scene to establish the nature of the blast, possible motives, and whether it was a targeted or accidental detonation.


The incident comes amid heightened security operations around Kampala, as Uganda hosts the annual Martyrs Day celebrations.
The day commemorates the execution of 45 Christian converts between 1885 and 1887 and is one of the country’s most significant religious events, drawing large crowds from Uganda and neighboring countries.
