U.S. Embassy Cautions Travellers as Tanzania Braces for December 9 Protests

The United States Embassy in Tanzania has issued a security alert ahead of nationwide demonstrations expected on December 9, warning that tensions in the country may escalate in the coming days.

According to the advisory, unrest could begin as early as December 5 as organisers rally supporters for large scale anti-government protests. The Embassy notes that previous weeks have seen heightened volatility following Tanzania’s disputed elections with several regions experiencing violence, arrests and restrictions on movement.

In the new alert, American citizens are urged to limit travel, avoid public gatherings and remain vigilant as security forces increase their presence in major cities. Travellers have also been told to anticipate sudden disruptions such as curfews, roadblocks, transport suspensions and potential internet or mobile network interruptions.

The advisory adds that authorities may conduct more frequent checks on foreigners, including inspections of electronic devices, as a precaution against the spread of protest related content.

Demonstrations planned for December 9 Tanzania’s Independence Day are expected to draw large crowds, raising concerns of clashes between police and protestors. Human rights groups have previously reported heavy handed responses by security forces during politically charged events.

The Embassy has encouraged its nationals to stay updated through local media, carry essential documents prepare personal contingency plans in case conditions deteriorate.
