UCEM Unveils 30-Day Mining Campaign Ahead of 14th Mineral Wealth Conference

The Uganda Chamber of Energy and Minerals (UCEM) has launched the second edition of its “30 Days of Mining Media Campaign,” an initiative designed to highlight the country’s mineral potential and promote sustainable investment ahead of the 14th Mineral Wealth Conference (MWC 2025).

The campaign, running from August 25 to September 25, 2025, will showcase Uganda’s mineral resources, including gold, copper, and cobalt while sparking conversations on responsible mining practices. With the theme “Sustainable Mineral Development through Collaboration, Innovation and Green Transitions: Unlocking Potential for a Resilient Future,” the program seeks to align industry growth with environmental and social responsibility.

Recent figures highlight mining’s growing role in Uganda’s economy. The sector’s contribution to GDP has risen from 0.3% in 2009/10 to 2.2% in 2022/23, while providing employment for nearly 600,000 Ugandans. Artisanal and small-scale miners, who account for over 90% of production, generate an estimated USD 850 million annually, underscoring the need to integrate them into formal systems.

Over the 30 days, UCEM will roll out nationwide media engagements, including TV, radio, print, and digital campaigns, as well as stakeholder dialogues. These activities will bring together government agencies, investors, academia, and civil society to deliberate on issues such as community inclusion, environmental safeguards, and innovation in mineral exploitation.

The initiative also reflects Uganda’s broader policy direction under the Mining and Minerals Act (2022) and the upcoming National Development Plan IV, which emphasize formalizing artisanal mining, strengthening regulatory institutions, and investing in infrastructure to support the industry.

By culminating in the Mineral Wealth Conference, the campaign is expected to set the stage for Uganda to position itself as a competitive, sustainable mining destination, attracting both local and international investors.
