
Excitement is building across the country as Uganda prepares to host its first set of matches for the 2024 TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) at the Mandela National Stadium (Namboole) this Monday, August 4th. The day will feature a thrilling double-header, with Niger taking on Guinea at 5 PM, followed by a primetime showdown between Uganda and Algeria at 8 PM.
Uganda joins Kenya and Tanzania as co-hosts of this prestigious continental tournament, which features national teams composed exclusively of players from their domestic leagues. The competition officially kicks off this Saturday, August 2, with the opening match between Tanzania and Burkina Faso in Dar es Salaam.
They are Heightened Security Measures in Place With thousands expected to attend Monday’s games in Kampala, Uganda’s security agencies have moved into high gear. The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), Uganda Police Force, and intelligence teams held a joint preparatory meeting on July 29 to plan for the safety of fans and players.
“I encourage every security personnel to maintain discipline during CHAN. I call upon everyone to exhibit maximum commitment and vigilance,” said CP Simon Peter Okoth, Deputy Director of Police Operations, who chaired the inter-agency meeting.
Key security measures will include round-the-clock surveillance and access control at hotels hosting foreign teams, including Speke Resort Munyonyo, Kampala Serena Hotel, Mestil Hotel Nsambya, and Four Points Sheraton.
Also, Kampala express highway, northern bypass, Yusuf Lule Road, then jinja traffic lights, punjan, mukwano road, Among others.
Traffic disruptions are also expected near these hotels and around training venues such as Fufa stadium in Mengo, Kadiba stadium in Mengo, KISU Bukoto, Wankulukuku, and Kyambogo University grounds and Mandela national stadium in Namboole. The public has been urged to plan and cooperate with law enforcement to ensure smooth movement during match days.

Tickets for Uganda’s CHAN fixtures are already on sale through official portals chan.tkt.ug and chan.mookh.com. The digital-only ticketing system is part of broader CAF reforms to modernize access and curb fraud. “We want every Ugandan who desires to experience this historic football event at Namboole to have the opportunity,” said Dr. Dennis Mugimba, Chairperson of the CHAN 2024 Communications Subcommittee. “This isn’t about making profits. It’s about national pride and football development.”
Each ticket covers entry to both matches scheduled that day. Re-entry will not be permitted after scanning.
Uganda Cranes will be Ready to Fly After their clash with Algeria on Monday, the Uganda Cranes will face, Guinea – August 8, Niger – August 11, South Africa – August 18.
As of Tuesday, the Niger national team had already arrived in Kampala, with Algeria, Guinea, and South Africa expected by the weekend. Uganda is keen to capitalize on home advantage, backed by passionate crowds at the freshly refurbished Namboole stadium.
