The Uganda U17 Men’s National Team, popularly known as the Cubs, reignited their hopes of qualifying for the FIFA U17 World Cup after a dominant 3-0 victory over neighbors Tanzania in their second group game at the TotalEnergies U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Uganda Bounce Back from Morocco Setback

After a disappointing start to the tournament with a loss to hosts Morocco, the Cubs delivered a spirited performance against Tanzania on Wednesday at the Bashir Mohammedia Stadium.

From the opening whistle, Uganda controlled possession and dictated the pace of the game, with Isma Magala and captain Richard Okello threatening early on.

Second-Half Surge Seals Victory

The breakthrough finally came in the 61st minute. Forward Simon Wanyama capitalized on a clever layoff from James Bogere to slot the ball home, putting Uganda ahead.

Tanzania’s hopes of a comeback were dealt a blow early in the second half when defender Hussein Ally Mbegu was shown a red card for a dangerous challenge, reducing the team to 10 men.

Uganda doubled the lead in the 84th minute when captain Richard Okello pounced on a rebound after Bogere’s shot was parried by the Tanzanian goalkeeper.

In added time, Uganda was awarded a penalty after Mohammed Makarani handled the ball in the box. Bogere calmly stepped up and converted from the spot to seal a convincing win.

Next Up: Decisive Clash Against Zambia

With this emphatic win, Uganda moves into strong contention for a place at the FIFA U17 World Cup. The Cubs will face Zambia in their final group match on Sunday. A win in that encounter will guarantee Uganda automatic qualification for the global showpiece.
