Ugandan investment banker Anne Aliker has been appointed Head of

Africa Regions – Corporate and Investment Banking (CIB) at Standard Bank Group, Africa’s largest bank by assets, marking a major milestone for Ugandan leadership in continental finance.

Aliker’s appointment, announced on October 30, underscores the bank’s commitment to promoting African leadership and elevating homegrown talent into strategic roles across its network.

Standard Bank Group Chief Executive for CIB, Luvuyo Masinda, said her promotion represents a key step in advancing the bank’s growth ambitions and future strategy.

“Our growth ambitions across CIB remain central to our strategy as we continue to unlock new opportunities, deepen client impact, and build a future-ready franchise,” Masinda said.

“Anne brings a wealth of experience and a proven record of strategic leadership across the continent.”

Aliker brings over two decades of banking experience to the position. She has held several senior roles within Standard Bank, including Head of CIB Uganda, Head of Investment Banking for Africa Regions and International, and most recently, Head of Client Coverage.

In her new role, she will oversee corporate and investment banking operations across 20 African markets, leading business development, client strategy, and regional integration in line with the bank’s mission to drive sustainable growth.

Masinda said her appointment marks a new phase in Standard Bank’s Africa-wide business transformation.

“It is an incredible honor to take on this role at such a transformative time for our continent,” Aliker said after her appointment.

“I am proud to represent Uganda within Africa’s largest bank and to lead alongside exceptional teams across our markets to deliver meaningful client impact. Our purpose—to drive Africa’s growth—is deeply personal to me.”

Her appointment adds to the growing list of Ugandan professionals in top leadership positions within the Standard Bank Group.

They include Anne Juuko, Regional Head for Global Markets, East Africa; Francis Karuhanga, Regional Chief Executive for Southern and West Africa; Doreen Rwakatungu-Musiime, Group Chief Audit Executive; and Patrick Mweheire, a Senior Group Executive and former Regional Chief Executive for East Africa.

Mumba Kalifungwa, Chief Executive of Stanbic Bank Uganda, hailed Aliker’s appointment as a “moment of pride” for Uganda’s banking fraternity.

“This is a validation of the strength and excellence of Uganda’s financial professionals on the continental stage,” he said.

“Anne’s journey reflects the remarkable depth of leadership talent Uganda continues to produce.”

Paul Muganwa, Executive Director and Head of CIB at Stanbic Bank Uganda, echoed similar sentiments, describing Aliker’s elevation as “a powerful testament to the quality of leadership emerging from Uganda.”

He said her appointment provides “inspiration for young professionals, particularly women in finance, who aspire to lead at the highest levels.”

Standard Bank Group, headquartered in Johannesburg, South Africa, has total assets exceeding USD 170 billion (UGX 641 trillion) and operates in 20 countries across sub-Saharan Africa.
