Ugandan Christians Mark Good Friday with Nationwide Way of the Cross Processions

By Joseph Kiggundu
Christians across Uganda joined millions around the world to commemorate Good Friday through solemn Way of the Cross processions, reflecting on the passion and death of Jesus Christ.

In several parts of the country, including Kampala, Yumbe District, Kanungu District, and Kabale, believers from different denominations—Catholic, Anglican, and other Christian communities—marched together in a show of unity, prayer, and repentance.

In Kampala, the Uganda Joint Christian Council organized a major gathering at Old Kampala Secondary School playground, drawing large crowds of worshippers. At the same time, Paul Ssemogerere led a procession from Rubaga Cathedral, guiding the faithful through prayers and reflections on Christ’s journey to Calvary.

In Mbuya, Christians from Our Lady of Africa Parish held a procession through Nakawa and Bugoloobi-Kiswa, retracing the Stations of the Cross in a deeply reflective observance of the day.

Meanwhile, in Yumbe, hundreds of believers participated in processions led by Parish Priest Jimmy Apangu, as communities gathered to pray for peace and spiritual renewal.

In the Kigezi sub-region, Christians in Kabale and Kanungu also marked the day with devotion. At Christ the King Church, Catholics joined others in solemn marches, while the Diocese of Kinkizi organized similar processions across Kanungu District.

In Nabbingo, Ambrose Bwangato, Parish Priest of Our Lady of Visitation Nabbingo, led the Way of the Cross, urging believers to embrace humility, forgiveness, and compassion. He reminded the faithful that Good Friday is a time to reflect on sacrifice and renew commitment to living Christ-like lives.

Across the country, messages of repentance, unity, and hope were emphasized, with religious leaders calling on Ugandans to seek reconciliation and work toward peace in their communities. The processions, marked by prayer, song, and scripture readings, underscored the enduring significance of Good Friday in the Christian faith
