KAMPALA. The Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) has urged security agencies to investigate the gruesome killing of Sheikh Rashid Awuni, the former Kadhi of Karamoja Muslim District in the North Eastern Muslim Region.
It is alleged that Sheikh Awuni was attacked on his way home last Monday night, and his body was later dumped in a bush, where it was discovered two days later.
The call for investigations was made by His Eminence Sheikh Muhammad Ali Waiswa, the Deputy Mufti, while chairing a special sitting of the National Management Committee on behalf of His Eminence Dr. Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje, the Mufti of Uganda, on Thursday, September 11, 2025.

The meeting, held in the UMSC boardroom, discussed a field report presented by the UMSC Independent Electoral Commission, led by Hon. Were Abubaker Wandagho, the Commission Chairperson.
In his opening remarks, Sheikh Waiswa informed members about the sad news of Sheikh Awuni’s passing, describing him as a loyal servant of the Council who diligently served during his tenure as Kadhi.
On his part, Haji Abbas Muluubya Ssekyanzi, the UMSC Secretary General, revealed that the deceased was pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Sharia on the Mufti’s bursary scheme at the UMSC-based Islamic Call University in Old Kampala. Sheikh Juma Bakhit Cucu, the Education Secretary, added that Sheikh Awuni had excelled in his studies and was in his final year, which would have made him the first qualified Sheikh in Sharia from the Karamoja sub-region.

The members, led by Sheikh Waiswa, offered fervent supplications beseeching Almighty Allah to bless his soul. Sheikh Muhammad Murshid Luwemba, the Secretary for Dawah (Islamic Propagation), was directed to organize funeral prayers for the deceased (Swalatul Ghaibu) during the Zuhr prayers at the National Mosque. The prayers were conducted in the presence of a large congregation.
They also prayed for the bereaved family to remain united and courageous during this difficult time.
