UNHCR Hails Church of Uganda for Life-Saving Humanitarian Response in Nakivale Refugee Settlement

In a powerful demonstration of faith in action, the Church of Uganda has received commendation from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) for its unwavering humanitarian support to refugees in Nakivale Refugee Settlement, Isingiro District.

The recognition follows the Church’s timely response to an emergency appeal in May 2025, initiated by the Provincial Secretary, Rev. Canon William Ongeng.

In response to the escalating influx of refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Church mobilized dioceses across Uganda, mission partners, and the Anglican Relief Development Fund (ARDF) to send a vital consignment of relief items to the settlement.

The aid package, tailored to meet urgent needs included bathing and washing soap, toothpaste, baby diapers, petroleum jelly, women’s undergarments, and clothing. Priority was given to women led households and individuals with special needs, reflecting a deep sensitivity to the unique challenges faced by the most vulnerable.

UNHCR Uganda Representative, Mr. Matthew Crentsil, formally acknowledged the Church’s efforts in a letter addressed to the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda.

The Most Rev. Dr. Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu. “Your support came at a time when resources were stretched thin,” the letter read, emphasizing that the Church’s action restored a sense of dignity to families torn apart by conflict and displacement.

Speaking on the significance of the initiative, the Church’s Provincial Treasurer, Mr. Balaam Muheebwa, reaffirmed the Church’s enduring commitment to humanitarian outreach.

“The Church of Uganda follows the mission of Jesus Christ to preach, to heal, to treat, and to feed the hungry.

“ This appeal is part of our Gospel witness in action, and we remain committed to serving those in need,” he stated.

The commendation came as ACT Alliance partners from Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania convened in Mbarara for a benchmarking visit to Nakivale. The week-long engagement focused on sharing best practices in regional refugee response.

The Church of Uganda continues to play a vital role in psychosocial support, promoting peaceful coexistence, and preventing gender-based violence within the refugee and host communities.

Through its action and advocacy, the Church of Uganda has reaffirmed its role as not only a spiritual guide but also a tangible source of hope in times of crisis.
