UNOC Background: A Catalyst for National Transformation
Established in 2015, the Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC) was created to manage the commercial interests of the State in the country’s petroleum sector. Over the past decade, the company has evolved into a cornerstone of Uganda’s journey toward becoming an oil-producing nation.
UNOC’s mandate covers the entire petroleum value chain—from exploration to production, refining, storage, transportation, and marketing. Through its strategic leadership and commitment to national development, UNOC has profoundly influenced the direction and growth of Uganda’s energy landscape.
How UNOC Has Transformed Uganda’s Oil and Gas Industry

1. Strengthening National Participation
UNOC’s involvement in key projects such as Tilenga, Kingfisher, and EACOP has enhanced Ugandan participation, expanded business opportunities, and created thousands of jobs, positioning Ugandans at the heart of the petroleum sector.
2. Enhancing Energy Security
UNOC’s management of strategic fuel reserves, alongside improvements in storage and distribution infrastructure, has safeguarded Uganda against fuel shortages—especially during regional supply disruptions.
3. Attracting Investment & Building Capacity
Through global partnerships, UNOC has enhanced investor confidence and facilitated knowledge transfer, empowering local talent with world-class expertise and management skills.
How UNOC Has Helped Keep Fuel Prices Stable
Fuel price stability has been one of UNOC’s notable contributions. The company has helped keep prices predictable through:
- Efficient bulk fuel procurement
- Managing national fuel reserves to cushion supply shocks
- Streamlined distribution that cuts operational costs
- Direct fuel importation, reducing middlemen and stabilizing market prices
These efforts have helped Uganda avoid the extreme price fluctuations seen in neighboring markets, protecting households, transportation, and businesses nationwide.
UNOC at the National Content Conference
As it celebrates ten years of excellence, UNOC proudly steps forward as a Gold Sponsor of the 6th Annual National Content Conference—a premier platform for advancing national content development in Uganda’s oil and gas sector.
This participation reaffirms its commitment to empowering Ugandans, strengthening local capacity, and creating sustainable national value.
