UWA Announces Free Entry to Five National Parks in September Tourism Drive

The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has declared free entry to five of the country’s most iconic savanna parks later this month, in a bold move to boost domestic tourism and raise public appreciation for conservation.

From September 25 to 27, Ugandans and residents will enjoy three days of complimentary access to Lake Mburo, Kidepo Valley, Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve, Murchison Falls, and Queen Elizabeth National Park. The initiative, dubbed Open Park Days, will also include free guided game drives, ranger services, and opportunities for filming and photography.

The announcement was made as part of activities leading up to World Tourism Day, which Uganda is celebrating under the theme of inclusive and sustainable tourism growth.

“Open Park Days give Ugandans the chance to experience their natural heritage firsthand. By removing financial barriers, we are encouraging families, schools, and communities to see the value of conservation and tourism,” UWA’s Executive Director, Dr. James Musinguzi, said during the launch.

The free entry offers focuses on savanna landscapes, where wildlife viewing is most rewarding. From the lion prides of Queen Elizabeth to the rugged wilderness of Kidepo Valley and the bird-rich plains of Lake Mburo, the parks offer a diverse range of experiences.

UWA says the campaign is not only about promoting tourism, but also about building stronger ties between Ugandans and their protected areas. “Conservation thrives when people feel connected to the land and wildlife,” officials noted.

This year’s campaign builds on the success of a similar exercise in 2024, when thousands of Ugandans took advantage of free entry days. Tourism operators say such initiatives are a win-win, introducing new audiences to the parks while stimulating business for local communities.

By making parks more accessible, UWA hopes to grow domestic tourism into a pillar of the industry, reducing dependence on international arrivals. Officials are also urging visitors to embrace responsible tourism practices during the free-entry period.

The three-day window is expected to attract record numbers of visitors, giving many their first opportunity to witness the beauty and biodiversity of Uganda’s wilderness.
