Veteran Ugandan Jurist Augustine Nshimye Dies at Home in Kampala

Retired Supreme Court Justice Augustine Nshimye has passed away at his residence in Kampala, according to the Judiciary’s Public Relations Officer, James Ereemye Mawanda.

Justice Nshimye is remembered as a respected figure in Uganda’s legal and political spheres, with a career that spanned several decades. He began his professional journey in 1967 as a senior clerk and steadily rose through the ranks. Between 1986 and 1988, he served as Deputy Chief Registrar before transitioning into private legal practice.

In 2008, he was appointed to the Court of Appeal, which also functions as the Constitutional Court. He later served as an acting Justice of the Supreme Court in 2010 and was formally appointed to the Supreme Court in September 2015.

Outside the judiciary, Nshimye also had a long and active political career. He represented Mityana South constituency in Parliament for 20 years, from 1988 to 2008, and served as Minister for Regional Cooperation under the National Resistance Movement government.

In 2015, he took on additional duties as Inspector of Courts, further contributing to the administration of justice in Uganda.

His son, Allan Nshiimye, confirmed that details regarding burial arrangements will be announced at a later time.
