Shock as UPDF soldier shoots self-dead after killing lover

AGAGO. The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) are investigating a suspected double homicide case involving one of their officers and his lover in Agago District.

Private John Adwel, a resident of Tekato Village, Lira-Kato Sub-County, reportedly shot and killed his lover, Florence Akello, 25, before turning the gun on himself.

Adwel also injured his two sisters-in-law, Mirriam Amolo, 16, and Esther Lawino, 15, who are currently receiving medical treatment at Dr. Ambrosoli Memorial Hospital in Kalongo for gunshot injuries.

“The UPDF officer rode on a motorcycle from Jengkwot Detach where he was deployed, up to her in-laws’ home where he later committed the offence,” said Alexander Okidi, the district councillor for Lira-Kato Sub-County.

Okidi added that Akello and Adwel had two children together but had separated following a domestic misunderstanding.

Four suspects, including two civilians and two UPDF officers, have been arrested to aid investigations into the incident.

Capt. Edrin Mawanda, the 5th Division Infantry Public Information Officer, confirmed the report, saying, “We have already commenced an investigation into the incident.”

The latest incident brings the number of civilians killed by UPDF officers in East Acholi since 2024 to seven.

The fatal shootings involve UPDF soldiers deployed in the area to protect livestock against being raided by armed Karamojong and South Sudanese warriors.

In a similar incident on August 28, two unarmed cattle farmers were shot dead by UPDF soldiers after being suspected of being armed cattle rustlers from the Karamoja sub-region.

The victims were identified as Joseph Obutu, 50, and Richard Opira, 42. The army has described the killing as accidental and has since issued an apology.
