Panic as thugs breaks break into Masindi Police, disappear with Nira machine

MASINDI.Police in Masindi District are investigating circumstances under which unknown thugs attacked Karujubu police post and made away with the National Identification Registration Authority (Nira) machine used to register and renew national ID in Karujubu Division.

The incident happened in the wee hours of Tuesday morning at around 3am.

Solomon Asiimwe, the Karujubu Division chairman said he was informed about the incident by the officer in charge at 4am in the morning.

He confirmed that the thieves stole some of the equipment for Nira including three laptops, long cable wire and some items were abandoned after police fired live bullets in air.

Asiimwe stresses that they are grappling with increased cases of theft asserting that thieves have resorted to waylaying residents and stealing coffee beans from gardens.

He therefore appealed to the district security committee to beef up security in their area as the country approaches the festive season.

Julius Isingoma, the Town Clerk Karujubu Division said that he was informed by the office attendant that thieves have attempted to break into the office of the accountant, but failed to break the padlock.

He said this prompted him to report the matter to Masindi Central Police Station under SD REF 53/18/11/025.

When contacted for a comment, Suzan Nabunje Kiyengo, the district Nira registrar confirmed the incident and that they are in touch with police to trace of the suspects.

Solomon Mugisa, the Albertine North Regional Community Liaisons Officer (CLO) also doubling as the regional Police PRO confirmed the theft and stated that they have commenced investigations.

He appealed to the community members to share information that may lead to the arrest of the suspects and tip the authorities in case anyone is selling gadgets including laptops.
