2026 polls: Bobi Wine pulls mammoth crowds in Kampala amid teargas, blockades

KAMPALA . National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine has proved that he “ rules “ Kampala City after pulling off massive crowds during his first campaign rally organised in Kawempe Division on Monday.

Hundreds of supporters gathered at the Kawempe Growers Playing Ground, cheering as the opposition leader arrived under heavy security presence.

Traffic slowed down in Bwaise, Kalerwe, and Mpererwe as NUP supporters poured into the area ahead of Bobi Wine ’s rally .

Security was tightened earlier in the day at the NUP headquarters in Makerere-Kavule, where supporters had pitched camp in anticipation of Bobi Wine’s press briefing before he set off for rallies in Kawempe North and South constituencies .

Police and military personnel deployed around the premises attempted to block processions forming near Kalerwe, ordering crowds to disperse, blocking all roads heading to NUP offices and restricting movement around the premises . When Kyagulanyi arrived , it appeared like the venue had been attacked by swam of bees , many NUP supporters jubilated and sang praise songs . Moments later he led the motorcade to the first venue with thousands of supporters marching on foot .

Despite the restrictions, ecstatic NUP supporters continued to gather in droves by the roadside , prompting police to fire teargas at several points to break up crowds both during and after the rally.

Police said in a statement on Monday evening that, “Currently, seven security officers have sustained serious injuries.”The law enforcement body added: “Several security vehicles were also damaged by the crowd including an ambulance. ”Clouds of gas lingered in sections of Kawempe and Kalerwe as security personnel dispersed groups escorting the NUP candidate. Bobi Wine condemned the security high handedness , accusing authorities of attempting to intimidate voters and derail his campaign.“ The day began with the usual military hostility unleashed on our peaceful supporters,” he said.
