
KISORO. Police in Kisoro District are holding Bufumbira North MP John Nizeyimana Kamara, three UPDF bodyguards and ten supporters over allegations of abduction and aggravated robbery.
In this crime, Police say the suspects were targeting supporters of Kamara’s opponent, retired Commissioner of Police Fortunate Gatera Habyara .
Kamara, who lost the July chaotic NRM primaries to Habyara, is accused of orchestrating a series of violent electoral incidents reported on Tuesday, 25 November 2025.
Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson Elly Maate confirmed the arrests, noting that two case files have been opened against Kamara and his group at Kisoro Central Police Station. These include a case of aggravated robbery and abduction under Kisoro CRB 771/2025
and aggravated robbery under Kisoro CRB 770/2025
The victims include PC Mandali Charles, attached to Nyarubuye Police Station; CPL Obworot Samuel, the Officer-in-Charge of Nyarubuye Police Station; and civilians Iragena Emmanuel and Nkaata Nicholas, who were allegedly assaulted, with Iragena reportedly abducted.
Police say PC Mandali’s firearm, allegedly stolen during the fracas, has been recovered and placed on exhibit. A mobile phone robbed from one of the civilian victims has also been recovered.
Those behind bars, according to Maate include; Tukamushaba Onesmas, UPDF soldier and Kamara’s bodyguard Ahaimbisa Decodmas, UPDF soldier and bodyguard Yesho Julius, UPDF soldier and bodyguard Twinomujuni Dickens Sabbiti ,Herbert Nzabalatuma ,Innocent Nsenga Stephen Dusangiza ,Innocent Tumukiza ,Gad Tugume, Joseph Niyonsihama, Edson Nzeyisenga ,Nicholas Ndagimana Fred
Maate said all victims were rescued and taken to Kisoro Hospital for medical treatment.
Following the arrests, the Kisoro District Police Commander convened an emergency District Security Committee meeting to assess the security implications and determine the next steps regarding the detained legislator and his group.
