UICT Showcases AVR Innovation to Parliamentary ICT Committee During Oversight Visit

The Uganda Institute of Information and Communications Technology (UICT) has showcased its growing role in advancing digital skills development during an oversight and verification visit by the Parliamentary Committee on ICT and National Guidance.

The delegation, led by Committee Chairperson Hon. Tonny Ayoo, was hosted at UICT to assess the institute’s training infrastructure, innovations, and contribution to national ICT capacity building.

A key highlight of the engagement was a live Augmented Virtual Reality (AVR) demonstration, which illustrated how the technology is transforming skills delivery across the country. Through the demonstration, UICT simultaneously trained Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) instructors at Ntinda Vocational Training Institute, farmers in Mayuge District, and secondary school teachers—showcasing the ability of AVR to deliver immersive, hands-on learning across multiple locations in real time.

UICT officials explained that AVR enables the institute to standardize training quality across institutions while scaling skills development without a proportional increase in cost. The technology allows learners to gain practical experience in simulated environments, overcoming traditional limitations such as distance, equipment shortages, and high training costs.

Members of Parliament also toured newly established smart classrooms fitted with interactive smart screens, advanced audio-visual conferencing systems, and Pan-Tilt-Zoom (PTZ) cameras designed to support hybrid and remote learning. The facilities are part of UICT’s broader effort to modernize ICT education and align training with evolving industry needs.

The Committee further inspected student-led innovations being incubated at the National ICT Innovation Hub, as well as an ongoing children’s robotics workshop aimed at nurturing interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) from an early age.

Hon. Ayoo commended UICT for leveraging emerging technologies to expand access to quality training and support national digital transformation. He noted that such initiatives are critical in equipping Ugandans with relevant skills for the digital economy and advancing the government’s ICT agenda.

The visit reaffirmed Parliament’s oversight role while highlighting UICT’s position as a key driver of innovation, skills development, and technology-enabled learning in Uganda.
