Prisons authorities name victims of Kiboga shooting

KIBOGA.

The Prison Authorities have named victims of tragic shooting at Kiboga Central Prison on Monday morning.

The shooting left three people dead, including the spouse of the Officer in Charge, after a warder opened fire on his superiors.

According to a press release from the Uganda Prisons Service issued on Monday, the incident occurred around 10:00 hours when No. 13544 Warder Anguyo Moses fatally shot Assistant Superintendent of Prisons Hope Catherine (Deputy Officer in Charge), Principal Officer I Akishuri Bright (3rd in Command), and Ms. Ayebare Sarah, spouse of the Officer in Charge.

The Commissioner General of Prisons described the event as “the unfortunate death of three persons following a shooting incident at Kiboga Prison.” The suspect fled the facility immediately after the attack.

Police were called in promptly, secured the scene, and recovered the gun used in the shooting. Joint security operations are underway to apprehend the suspect, who remains at large and is considered dangerous.

The public has been urged to provide any information on his whereabouts to the police. “Anyone with valuable information regarding his whereabouts is urged to inform the Police,” the statement noted. Authorities promised updates on developments as the investigation continues.

The killings took place at the prison facility in Kiboga District, amid reports from local media indicating the victims included prison officers and a child—though the official release specifies the three named individuals. The motive behind the shooting has not been disclosed, and a probe is ongoing.

The Uganda Prisons Service expressed deep regret over the loss. The release concluded with a solemn tribute: “May the souls of the deceased rest in eternal peace.”

This shocking incident has heightened concerns about security and internal dynamics within Uganda’s prison facilities. Authorities are intensifying the manhunt for Warder Anguyo Moses to ensure public safety and bring him to justice.
