Death toll in Kiboga Prison shooting rises to four

Kiboga.

A fourth victim has died following the deadly shooting incident at Kiboga Central Prison, after a toddler who was critically injured in the Monday morning attack succumbed to wounds.

The child, the son of the Officer in Charge of Kiboga Prison, was shot during the Monday morning incident and sustained a bullet wound to the stomach. He was rushed to Kiboga Hospital alongside his father for emergency treatment but passed away on Monday night, hospital sources confirmed.

The toddler’s death deepens the tragedy for the family, as his mother, Ms Ayebare Sarah, was among those killed during the shooting. Ayebare was the spouse of the Officer in Charge and one of the initial three fatalities reported.

Uganda Prisons Service spokesperson Frank Baine confirmed the latest death.

“Yes, it is true. A toddler who was also shot in Monday’s incident has unfortunately passed on at Kiboga Hospital,” Baine said in a phone interview.

Deadly Attack Inside Prison

The shooting occurred at around 10:00am on Monday, when Warder Moses Anguyo (Prison ID No. 13544) allegedly opened fire on his superiors inside the prison premises.

Those fatally shot on the spot were:Assistant Superintendent of Prisons Hope Catherine, Deputy Officer in Charge

Principal Officer I Akishuri Bright, third in command

Ms. Ayebare Sarah, spouse of the Officer in Charge

The toddler later died from injuries sustained during the same attack, bringing the death toll to four.

After the shooting, the suspect fled the scene, triggering a joint security operation involving police and other agencies. Authorities described him as armed and dangerous at the time of the manhunt. The firearm used in the attack has since been recovered.

Investigations are ongoing to establish the motive behind the shooting. While some preliminary reports point to possible internal grievances, security agencies say no official conclusion has yet been reached.

Prisons Service Responds

The Uganda Prisons Service, through a statement from the Commissioner General, expressed deep sorrow over the incident and extended condolences to the bereaved families.

The service also appealed to the public to cooperate with security agencies by providing any information that could aid ongoing investigations.

The rare and violent incident has sparked renewed concern about staff welfare, mental health, and internal security protocols within Uganda’s correctional facilities.

As the Kiboga community and the Prisons Service mourn the victims, questions continue to mount over how such a deadly breach could occur within a high-security institution.
