Among hosts Muslim MPs for Iftar Dinner as speakership race intensifies

Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among has hosted Muslim Members of Parliament-elect and other invited guests for an iftar dinner at her residence in Nakasero, a Kampala posh suburb .

This was done to show interfaith solidarity, reconciliation and outreach to the Muslim community during this holy month of Ramadhan which entered the 8th day on Wednesday .

The dinner was co-hosted by her husband, Hashim Moses Magogo, drawing legislators and religious leaders for prayers and a shared breaking of the fast.

The Tuesday evening Dinner began with special prayers led by Sheikh Hadad Tandiya, the County Sheikh of Bombo Twale, who guided the congregation through supplications marking the significance of Ramadan as a period of reflection, forgiveness and unity.

During a similar engagement last year, Speaker Among used the occasion to call for harmony within the Muslim community.

She noted that Ramadhan had come at a time when divisions were threatening cohesion and urged leaders to pursue dialogue and reconciliation.

“Ramadhan this year came when divisions are threatening to tear the Muslim community further apart. As your Parliament, we take great concern but encourage you to resolve outstanding issues amicably,” she said at the time.

The annual iftar dinner has become a tradition for the Speaker. Beyond fellowship, she has previously used the platform to advocate for support to vulnerable communities and to promote the development of Islamic banking in Uganda as an avenue for financial inclusion.

The gathering at Nakasero once again highlighted Parliament’s engagement with faith communities during Ramadhan, reinforcing messages of unity, compassion and national cohesion. The event comes at a time when Among is galvanizing support among legislators to retain her chair as speaker for a second term after four other contenders including Justice Minister Norbert Mao have expressed interest in the coveted seat .
