The Nakawa Magistrate’s Court has postponed the hearing of a bail application filed by opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) electoral committee member John Mary Ssebuwufu to March 10, following a request by the prosecution for more time to prepare its response.
The adjournment, confirmed by NUP Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya on his social media platforms, marks the third time Ssebuwufu’s bail application has been deferred.
Ssebuwufu, was arrested on January 14 and spent three weeks incommunicado before being presented in court.
Rubongoya alleged that the arrest is linked to the party’s vote protection activities, though authorities have not independently verified this claim.
During Tuesday’s court proceedings, the prosecution informed the magistrate that it needed more time to file its response to the bail application.
In response, the magistrate rescheduled the hearing to March 10 for further proceedings.
The delay comes amid growing attention to arrests of opposition figures in Uganda, with party officials highlighting concerns over procedural fairness and timely access to court.
Ssebuwufu’s case is expected to resume on March 10, when the court will consider both the defense and prosecution submissions before ruling on the bail application.
