KAMPALA — The Kampala City Hall Court has fined a businesswoman, Annet Phiona Nakafu, Shs500,000 for failing to maintain legally required employment records for a driver she had hired.

Nakafu, 36, was convicted after pleading guilty to employing a driver without keeping written records of his personal details and driving permit information.

The court ruled that she would serve four months in Luzira Prison if she fails to pay the fine.

Prosecution told court that Nakafu committed the offence on April 13, 2025, at around 9:00am in Kalinabiri Zone, Ntinda, Kampala District.

Court heard that Nakafu had employed a driver to operate a blue Isuzu motor vehicle, registration number UAT 549F, but failed to maintain a written record indicating the driver’s name, address and driving permit number, as required by law.

She was charged with the offence of an employer failing to keep records of an employee, contrary to Sections 142 and 164(1) of the Traffic and Road Safety Act, Cap 347.

According to the prosecution, the matter came to light after the vehicle was involved in an accident in which it reportedly rammed into and damaged a building. The driver allegedly fled the scene, abandoning the vehicle.

Nakafu later reported to the police to claim the vehicle but was unable to provide the driver’s particulars because she had not documented his details. The driver has reportedly not been traced to date.
