The Airtel Africa Foundation, in partnership with Brainchild Burson, has provided high-tech laptops and scholastic materials valued at Shs10 million to 20 university students as part of a fellowship program aimed at promoting digital access and education.
The items were handed over on Thursday at Airtel Towers during an event that marked the next phase of a scholarship initiative targeting students from disadvantaged backgrounds pursuing science and technology courses.
Earlier in February, the program awarded scholarships to 20 learners studying at several universities including Makerere University, Kyambogo University, Mbarara University of Science and Technology, ISBAT University and Uganda Christian University.
Speaking during the handover, Flavia Lwanga said the laptops are intended to support students in their academic work and reduce reliance on paid internet café services.
She explained that the initiative aims to equip the beneficiaries with the digital tools needed for research, learning and innovation, adding that the knowledge they acquire will help them contribute to national development.
Lwanga noted that the fellowship aligns with the foundation’s broader focus on financial inclusion, education, environmental sustainability and digital inclusion.
Meanwhile, Fireworks Advertising—the parent company of Brainchild Burson—also contributed to the program. Its Chief Executive Officer, Walter Wafula, said Shs8 million of the contribution will go toward educational materials while Shs2 million has been allocated to support internship opportunities.
Wafula added that the four best-performing students will be offered internships in digital marketing and information technology departments, giving them practical industry experience.
Some of the beneficiaries welcomed the support, saying access to modern laptops will significantly improve their academic work. Michael Kirinnya noted that the new device will help him code more efficiently and enhance his studies.
The Airtel Africa Foundation Tech Fellowship Program operates in several African countries and supports talented students from low-income backgrounds who are pursuing careers in technology.
The initiative is also aligned with the development goals outlined in Uganda Vision 2040, which aims to expand digital skills and technological innovation across the country.
